Public Transport

Public transport in Slovenia is quite well organized and reliable. There are regular connections between the cities by Trains and Busses. Trains offer a quick and comfortable link between the cities, while buses also go to more remote places. Both offer discounts for students, seniors, unemployed etc.

Slovenia is a small country, so the main public transport here is the bus. City buses run according to a schedule posted at bus stops. The route numbers and directions are also indicated there.
Buses run from 5:00 to 22:30, but on the main routes they run from 3:00 to 24:00.
The schedule is on the website www.lpp.si or in the LPPinfo app.
The cost of a bus ride is from 1.3 to 2.7 euros, depending on the number of zones crossed. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes, during which time you can transfer to other routes. To reduce the cost of travel, you can buy an unlimited travel card:
- a monthly travel card for adults costs from 37 to 63 euros, depending on the number of zones crossed, and an annual one - from 365 to 630 euros.

Public Transport in Cities

Every city has its own public transport where buses drive regularly and frequently. In Ljubljana, you need to buy Urbana – smart card, allowing quick and convenient cash-free payment for rides in Ljubljana city. The Urbana card can also be used to pay for cable-car rides to the Ljubljana Castle, public parking fees and some parking lots as well as the services of the Ljubljana City Library. You can load credit or buy a period ticket. You can buy the card and load the credit at any tobacco shop. Find more info here: http://www.lpp.si/en/single-city-card-urbana. You have to validate your card when entering the bus. In Maribor, the system is the similar: http://www.marprom.si/en/tickets-and-prices/.

You can buy a daily ticket on the bus.

Tickets can be bought at tobacconists, at stations from vending machines or at ticket offices, sometimes also from the driver and online.
Sometimes tickets must be bought in advance. The fine for travelling without a ticket is very high.
Monthly and annual tickets are available. Pupils, schoolchildren and students can apply for a seasonal one-semester or annual pass at a reduced price.
There are seats in public transport reserved especially for the elderly, people with disabilities and pregnant women.
Smoking is prohibited on public transport. Pets such as dogs are allowed, but only on a leash and with a muzzle.

The fare can only be paid with the Urbana karta card; cash is not accepted on the bus. The card can be purchased and topped up at terminals at bus stops or at newsstands. The Urbana karta can also be used to pay for the cable car to Ljubljana Castle, parking, the Ljubljana Library, and entrance fees to museums, sports and cultural events.

If you register to rent bikes for a week/year, you can use them 24/7 free of charge (the first hour is free, later small fees apply), but first you have to register on-line with your credit card (and pay a small fee of 3€).
