Public Transport

The transport infrastructure in Romania is state-owned and managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Construction and Tourism.

The country's most important waterway is the Danube River. The largest port is Constanta, the second largest port on the Black Sea.

Bucharest Airport is a major international airport and a European transport hub. Air travel is used for longer distances within Romania.

The state-owned CFR rail network operates. Public transport is available.

Train

If you need to travel by train in Romania, always try to take the InterCity or InterRegio (IR), as they are the fastest and usually have the most modern rolling stock. Regio (R-) trains (which were known as Personal until recently) are slow. You will also see trains marked ICN: these are InterCity trains that stop at more stations than usual and are more like InterRegios. Prices for all types of trains are relatively low. For example, an adult InterRegio ticket from Bucharest to Brasov currently costs 12 euros.

To buy train tickets, visit either the station or the CFR agency, or buy tickets online at bilete.cfrcalatori.ro. There are quite significant discounts available when buying round-trip tickets online in advance.

As of 2024, the Bucharest Metro is the only metro system in Romania; a second line, the Cluj-Napoca Metro, is under construction.

The use of the Bucharest metro system is based on a magnetic card, which can be purchased at metro stations, which entitles either to a fixed number of journeys over a longer period, or to an unlimited number of journeys over a single fixed period.

Magnetic cards for metro access cannot be used to travel on public transport on the surface.

Payment options for metro tickets

You can buy a ticket for cash at the ticket office. You can pay for a ticket at the ticket office and at ticket machines with Visa, MasterCard, VisaElectron and Maestro bank cards. You can pay for metro travel with bank cards when passing through the turnstile, specially installed for contactless technology.
