Greenland

The world’s largest island Greenland – in Greenland’s language Kalaallit Nunaak – is an autonomous part of Denmark.

Greenland is home to almost 60,000 people.

The Greenlandic transport system is very unusual in that Greenland has no railways, no inland waterways and virtually no roads between towns. Historically, the main means of transportation were boats along the coast in summer and dog sleds in winter, especially in the north and east. Nowadays, the main mode of transportation is air travel by helicopter or other aircraft.
All civil aviation matters are handled by the Danish Civil Aviation Authority or the Greenland Airport Authority. In 2024, Nuuk Airport was significantly rebuilt and expanded, which resulted in the relocation of the international hub from Kangerlussuaq.

Greenland has 18 runways, 14 of which are paved. All domestic flights are operated by Air Greenland. Year-round scheduled international flights are available to Copenhagen and Keflavik-Reykjavik Airport, Iceland. Other airlines operate seasonal and charter flights. Icelandair flies from Keflavik-Reykjavik to Nuuk, Kulusuk, Ilulissat and Narsarsuaq. Air Greenland also operated a route from Iqaluit in Canada to Nuuk in the summer for several years.

Roads

There are no roads between the settlements, only in and around them. There are 150 km of roads in the entire country; 60 km of roads are paved. The roads are main or local roads, there are no motorways in Greenland.

There is a 4.5 km long paved road between the towns of Ivittuut and Kangilinnguit.

Speed limits range from 50 kilometers per hour for local roads to 80 kilometers per hour on main roads.

Water transport

There are ports in Ilulissat, Kangerlussuaq (also known by its Danish name Søndre Strømfjord), Qaqortoq, Narsaq, Nuuk (Godtobe), Aasiaat and Sisimiut. Several other towns also have smaller ports. The main users of the harbours are Royal Arctic Line and Arctic Umiaq Line.

There are no car ferries to or from Greenland. Cars can be transported as container cargo with Royal Arctic Line (both within the country and from Denmark). Passengers must travel by other means. This is done mainly when moving or buying a car, not when travelling, as there is no major road network anywhere.

Many tourists arrive in Greenland on cruise ships.

There are buses running in Ilulissat, Nuuk, Kangerlussuaq, Maniitsoq and Qaqortoq.

Nuup Bussii A/S Bus The Nuup Bussii company with 18 buses carries about 7,000 passengers on 4 lines numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Lines 1 and 2 connect the city with the modern suburbs of Kinngorput and Nuussuaq, with the university every 20 minutes during the day.

Lines 1, 2, 3 are supplemented by lines X1, X2, X3 during rush hour.

There are about 5,000 cars in Nuuk, which travel on 120 km of paved roads, as well as on a few gravel roads.

There is a ring line in Sisimiut (Kommunia Qeqqata), which usually runs every 20 minutes, operated by Polar Entreprise. Around 75 buses of varying capacity operate throughout the country.
