Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region  - Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland

Vienna currently has five subway lines with 109 stations on 83 km of track, 28 tram routes and 131 bus routes. The total public transportation network amounts to over 1,150 km in length. Wiener Linien is choosing to modernize its fleet of buses by deploying increasing numbers of electric buses. The WienMobil app lets mobile users know when the next tram, subway train or bus departs. Real-time information for all stops, integrated timetable information and disruption information enable users to get around on public transport without complication.

Vienna can also be admired on over 1,720 km of cycle paths, cycle lanes and cycle routes through low-traffic zones. Visitors who would like to view the city and its attractions from the saddle of a bicycle and in the fresh air should ideally climb on board a bike of WienMobil: This bike sharing system is also easy to use for visitors to Vienna. Over 3,000 bicycles are available across Vienna.

There is a lot to discover in Vienna, and with the Vienna City Card you can travel flexibly on public transport for a 7 days and enjoy all the benefits for the duration of your stay - from museum visits and discounts on concert and theater tickets to discounts on shopping, restaurants and hotels. A City card with these features will cost you 35 euros per week. Although there are other prices.

Bicycles and Vienna`s Public Transportation

All important traffic junctions - especially at subway stations - provide the opportunity to park bicycles (about 17,000 bicycle stands) if one wants to change to public transportation. Parking is free of charge: it is recommended, however, to lock the bicycle to prevent theft.

U-Bahn (Subway)

  • Mon-Fri: if a working day: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m.; Sat, Sun and holidays all day. Free!
  • Entry is permitted only through those doors that are specially marked with a bicycle symbol. In the subway, please always place your bicycle perpendicular to the direction in which the train travels.

Bicycles cannot be carried on buses and trams for safety reasons. Exception: folded bicycles.

Schnellbahn (City Train)

  • Bicycles are permitted at any time in every train. Reservations are not possible, and bicycles can only be taken on board if sufficient free spaces are available.
  • Prices: Within Vienna, you will need a discounted single ticket for your bicycle. For trips outside Vienna, special tickets are offered at the ÖBB rate (single, weekly or monthly tickets).

Sharing models in Vienna

Many different kinds of bicycles are offered for rental by private individuals and bicycle shops on the bike sharing platform listnride.com. There are possibilities to rent a bicycle at many places in the city.

If you need a car, you don't have to own one in Vienna: Carsharing is the name of the welcome alternative as a further step towards personal mobility. Wiener Linien now operate six WienMobil stations in Simmering, Ottakring, Mariahilf, Neubau, Landstraße and Leopoldstadt. At the WienMobil locations, the public transport services of trams, buses and underground trains are linked to rental offers such as scooter sharing, rental cars and bike sharing. The "WienMobil Auto" offer is integrated into the WienMobil app and can be booked directly with the provider "share me". The electric vehicles can be rented at existing WienMobil stations and at other locations throughout Vienna. Discounted rates are available for annual ticket holders. Cars can be rented across the city also from www.share-now.com.

Travel Card From 24 hours to a full month: You are always at the heart of the city with the right ticket.

  • The flexible 7-day VIENNA ticket is also available as a transferable paper ticket.
  • The flexible 31-day VIENNA ticket is also available as a transferable paper ticket.
  • The 1-day VIENNA ticket (valid for one calendar day) will no longer be available from 1 July 2024. As an alternative, we recommend the flexible 24-hour VIENNA ticket with a freely selectable start date.
  • The weekly ticket (valid for one calendar week) will no longer be available from 1 July 2024. As an alternative, we recommend the flexible 7-day VIENNA ticket with a freely selectable start date.
  • The monthly ticket (valid for one calendar month) will no longer be available from 1 July 2024. As an alternative, we recommend the flexible 31-day VIENNA ticket with a freely selectable start date.
  • The 8-day climate ticket (8 strips for 8 calendar days) will no longer be available from 1 July 2024. As an alternative, we recommend the flexible 24-hour VIENNA ticket.

Top Youth Ticket

Free travel to school or work for a year, and with the Top Youth Ticket also in your free time.

The Top Youth Ticket is valid on all public transport in the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland). It is valid on all days including weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

The Top Youth Ticket can be displayed as an e-ticket directly on your smartphone in the WienMobil app or used as a PDF ticket in printed form. If you have purchased the ticket online, you can simply print it out again, for example if your child loses it.

The Top Youth Ticket is valid in conjunction with the student or apprentice ID card.

  • You can buy the ticket a little earlier in the WienMobil ticket shop (web and app). This also has the advantage that you can simply print out the ticket again if it gets lost (this is generally only possible for tickets purchased online).
  • At the ÖBB ticket counters and at the ticket machines in the stations
  • If you live in Lower Austria or Burgenland, you can also buy the Top Youth Ticket at post offices and postal partners.

Annual pass

The annual pass is offered as a digital ticket. This is an electronic ticket is available online in the WienMobil ticket shop (website and app) and is displayed digitally in the WienMobil app.

The ticket is displayed in the WienMobil app; it cannot therefore be issued or printed as a receipt card. To buy the digital annual pass at the WienMobil ticket office, you need a valid customer account at the WienMobil ticket office. You can buy the annual pass as a receipt card at one of our ticket offices and at the WienMobil ticket office. If you buy it at the ticket office, please bring a recent photo of your passport and an official photo ID.  The Wiener Linien annual pass – both digital and as a plastic card – is valid for 365 days from the first day of the selected month on all public transport in the central area of ​​Vienna. It entitles you to unlimited travel on the underground, tram and bus (except special express lines), suburban trains (ÖBB) and the Badner Bahn (to Vösendorf-Siebenhirten). The annual pass is not valid on the WESTbahn, the City Airport Train (CAT), the airport express services and travel services.

Annual pass as a work pass: the cardholder is the employee, the ticket is paid for by the employer. Companies can buy an annual pass for their employees and count it as a "work pass" towards their taxes. With a work pass, the cardholder is the employee, but the employer pays for it.

There are two ways to get a work pass:

  • The company orders and pays for the annual pass. The employee cannot manage the pass (e.g. renew or cancel it).
  • The employee orders and pays for the annual pass and pays the employer. In this case, the employee orders and pays for the annual pass as a private client and pays the employer. The employee can manage the pass independently (e.g. renew it).
Who is entitled to the Youth Ticket?

Semester ticket

The ticket for students under the age of 26. Travel throughout Vienna, day and night, for five months.

  • The semester pass is valid for five months: in the winter semester, from 1 September to 31 January, and in the summer semester, from 1 February to 30 June. Students can obtain a summer holidays monthly ticket for July and August.
  • The ticket is valid on all lines within Vienna (core zone of Vienna) on the underground, trams and buses (with the exception of special rapid bus lines), trains operated by ÖBB (e.g. suburban trains) and on services operated by Wiener Lokalbahnen (as far as Vösendorf-Siebenhirten)
  • The ticket is valid for ordinary students of a study institution pursuant to Sec. 3 of the Studies Promotion Act (Studienförderungsgesetz – StudFG) who are under the age of 26 when the respective semester begins. The winter semester begins on 1 September and the summer semester begins on 1 February.

Mobile tickets

Mobile tickets are not transferable

Tickets that are bought on a smartphone are displayed on the mobile phone and cannot be printed out. They are customised for the person buying them or for a companion, and are therefore not transferable.

Buy tickets for other people

If you buy a ticket for another person via the Wiener Linien ticket app or in the online ticket shop, please note that this person must be in possession of the mobile phone of the person who bought the ticket in case of a ticket inspection. It is not possible to pass on tickets bought by text message or email to family members or other individuals.

Discounts and free travel in the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region  

Children and youths 

Young passengers who do not go to school yet travel free of charge. Free travel with Wiener Linien also applies until the end of the academic year in which the child turns six. Children may travel free of charge on ÖBB suburban trains until the age of six.

During the school holidays in Vienna, on Sundays and public holidays, as well as on 2 and 15 November, children and youths may travel free of charge on Wiener Linien’s network, until the age of 15. However, free travel does not apply on so-called school-free days that are approved by the respective school. In the case of older pupils (excluding vocational pupils) who attend a state school in Austria or a private school with public status, this free travel rule applies until they turn 24. The school ID card is recognised as proof.

Senior citizens

Persons aged 65 or over may buy the single tickets for one or two journeys at a reduced rate for senior citizens. Similarly, senior citizens may also purchase the annual pass at a reduced rate. Otherwise, senior citizens pay the normal ticket price.

Schnellbahn   City Train 

You will find an overview here of all the main long-distance routes, along with practical information on everything from the shortest journey times to the best prices to timetables.

You can travel by ÖBB Railjet, Eurocity, Intercity or Südbahn Express . Long-distance trains will get you safely and comfortably to your destination. On connections to Germany, the ICE is another high-speed train travelling on the Austrian rail network. Enjoy the journey in  individually equipped trains.

ÖBB Train Radar
The ÖBB Train Radar displays all ÖBB trains currently in operation on a map of Austria. By clicking on a train, you can access real-time information - current location and punctuality - as well as the next stops. You can limit the selection to certain types of trains (e.g. Railjet or S-Bahn) as well as individual trains.

Südbahn Express to Carinthia

On your journey from Vienna to Carinthia and back, you can choose between a Railjet connection and the improved service on the Intercity connections: 4 Intercity (IC) train pairs run daily on the Vienna-Villach-Vienna line under "Südbahn Express" brand. The Südbahn Express is the perfect way to get to the south of Austria even on busy days.

Nightjet - a new travel experience

The new generation Nightjet makes overnight travel even more pleasant for you, with modern design, more privacy and greater comfort. With a speed of up to 230 km/h, the new trains take you to many European cities overnight in a climate-friendly way.

Travelling is even more comfortable in the sleeping car as all compartments are fitted with their own toilet and shower facilities. A comfortable seating area allows relaxed working, reading or eating during the journey. Built-in beds in the sleeper cabin and in the new 4-berth couchette increase your sleeping comfort and ensure a relaxed arrival at your destination. Buying tickets in the ÖBB app has never been this easy: The new additional function SimplyGo! recognises the routes traveled between locations within Austria through GPS tracking and determines the appropriate public transport fare for each route on the following day*. Simply perfect for all those who enjoy travelling flexibly and spontaneously by train, bus, subway and tram.

Once you have successfully checked in, you can use the following means of public transport within Austria, including corridor routes: 

  • ÖBB regional and long-distance trains 
  • ÖBB buses within Austria 
  • Selected regional trains (e.g. GKB and GYSEV) 
  • All regional bus and city transport operators that accept tickets issued by the transport associations (e.g. Wiener Linien, Graz Linien and Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe)

Here's how it works

  • Activate the feature in the ÖBB customer account by clicking on "My account" and selecting “SimplyGo!”
  • Next, please follow the activation process and fill in the required data. This activation is necessary only once and is free of charge.
  • Upon successful activation, you can directly access SimplyGo! in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen in the ÖBB app. You can immediately start travelling conveniently between locations within Austria (incuding corridor routes).
  • To start your public transport journey, click on SimplyGo! in the menu bar, check the pre-selected stop and swipe to the right before boarding the chosen means of transport.
  • At the destination stop, swipe left after exiting the chosen means of transport to end your trip.
  • You can view the preliminary price of your completed trip in the SimplyGo! area under "My Account".
  • Optimised billing is automatically carried out on the following day via your credit/ debit card. You will also receive a detailed overview of your billed trips via email.

Discounts 

The ÖBB Vorteilscard is the right choice if you are looking for flexible travel throughout Austria. This card gives you a 50% discount** on every ÖBB standard ticket. The card pays for itself with just a few journeys per year. The Vorteilscard is available in the variants Classic, 66 (only online and mobile), Youth, Senior and Family, through the ÖBB app, in the ÖBB ticket shop, at ÖBB ticket counters and in ÖBB travel agents.

Vorteilscard Comfort: The digital option with more comfort!

The new Vorteilscard Comfort is the ideal offer for those who like to travel economically AND want to reserve their favourite seat on the train. The Card comes with all the usual benefits of the Vorteilscard Classic/66 and offers an additional 50% discount on seat reservations, and all this for only € 86.- for the first purchase, or at an advantage price of only € 76.- when changing from an existing Vorteilscard!

The Vorteilscard Comfort is a purely digital product and works without a plastic card. Simply order online or on a mobile device and easily add it to your account in the ÖBB app. This means you always have the Vorteilscard Comfort conveniently with you on your smartphone.

Please note that you need to provide your Vorteilscard Discount Card number details when buying a ticket. You can conveniently save this information in the app or online in your ÖBB account. This saves you having to re-enter your details when booking via your account in the future.

Vorteilscard offer

Vorteilscard Card 66

Our online product for everyone with no age limit. For € 66.- a year, the Vorteilscard Card 66 entitles you to discounted travel by train. There are no other eligibility requirements for the card, and it is only available online from shop.oebbtickets.at and through the mobile ÖBB app under “Additional offers”. To purchase the card you will require an ÖBB Account.

For € 99.- a year, the Vorteilscard Classic entitles you to discounted travel by train. There are no other eligibility requirements for this card either, and it is available from any ÖBB ticket counter.

Do you have a valid Vorteilscard Classic?
We will send you a follow-up offer in good time before your card expires. If you renew your card on time, you only pay € 66.- for the new contract year and receive the tried-and-tested benefits in return.

 

Vorteilscard Jugend

For anyone under 26: For € 19.- a year, the Vorteilscard Jugend entitles you to discounted travel by train. This card is available for anyone under 26 (until 1 day before their 26th birthday).

Note
Children are defined as passengers between 6 and 14 years (until one day before their 15th birthday). Children are entitled to a 50% discount on a standard single traveller ticket.

 

Vorteilscard Senior

For € 29.- a year, the Vorteilscard Senior entitles you to discounted travel by train. This card is available for everyone over 65 years of age. Please note that for journeys within most regional public transport networks in Austria, the senior citizen reduction applicable in the respective public transport network is applied. This may be lower than the ÖBB Vorteilscard reduction (50% on ÖBB standard single tickets).

As a senior citizen with a compensatory or supplementary allowance, you can receive the Vorteilscard Senior Free at no charge. In addition, many regional public transport networks offer further discounts for senior citizens. The Vorteilscard Senior Free is only available from ÖBB ticket counters on proof of your eligibility.

The Vorteilscard Comfort

The Vorteilscard Comfort is our digital product which works without a plastic card. The Vorteilscard Comfort allows you to travel by train economically for € 86.- per year. Moreover, you get a 50% discount on seat reservations for domestic and international long-distance day time trains.

The offer does not require any special prerequisites and is only available in the ÖBB app, or online in the ÖBB ticket shop under "other offers". You will need an ÖBB account to purchase the card.

Vorteilscard Family

With the Vorteilscard Family, you can travel with children at particularly low prices. Up to four children under the age of 15 can travel free of charge for only € 19.- per year. Please note that the card is only valid for journeys together with children and that each accompanying adult requires their own Vorteilscard Family. The children travelling with you must be named when purchasing the ticket. You do not have to be related to them.

Note
Infants from 0 to 5 years of age always travel free of charge on ÖBB trains when accompanied by a young person or adult.

Travellers with disabilities do not need an Vorteilscard, but travel at a 50% discount with their disabled pass or severely disabled pass.

The Vorteilscard is personalised and is not transferable to other persons. It can be purchased up to 6 months before the desired validity date and is valid for 12 months. Please have a photo ID with proof of your age ready for every train journey.

Recognition by transport associations 

For journeys with standard single tickets and season tickets for travellers within a public transport system, the respective association's rate always applies. This means that in this case the fare will be charged exclusively according to the rules of the respective public transport authority. If the ÖBB Vorteilscard or a similar proof of entitlement to a discounted fare is recognised by the respective transport association, only the corresponding discount stipulated by the transport authority will be granted. These discounts deviate from ÖBB’s discounts and may be lower or higher. If the ÖBB Vorteilscard is not recognised by the respective transport association, you will always receive an ÖBB standard single ticket with the respective ÖBB discount.       Our WESTflexpreis fare offers you full flexibility –  simply hop on the next WESTbahn train. Tickets at the WESTflexpreis fare are not personalised or train-bound. The WESTflex price is available online, in our WESTshops (+ € 1,-), in selected tobacconists (+ € 2,-) or directly on the train (+ € 3,10,-).

      Students & Apprentices

      All students of an Austrian or German university, a higher eductaion institution as well as pupils and apprentices attending school or apprenticeship training in Austria or Germany receive a 10% discount on the WESTflex fare. Please show your valid ID from an educational or training institution when checking your ticket on the train. No age limit applies.
